An energy efficient home requires attention to details, it’s a culmination of efforts throughout the building process. This includes stopping air infiltration, high U value/low solar gain windows, above code insulation and high efficiency HVAC systems. Green Building & Geothermal are cornerstones in saving energy and the customer a lot of money.
A great deal of air infiltration comes from behind outlet and switch boxes that are adjacent to outside walls. We spray expanding foam behind all these areas and at wall penetrations to greatly reduce this effect.
The ground temperature at 6 feet below grade in our area is approximately 67 degrees, this is an almost perfect temperature as a medium for a heat pump system. Geothermal systems have the added benefit of suppling free hot water in the summer time.
Extra storage capacity is normally added to a geothermal system to take advantage of the normal waste heat.
High SEER (Seasonal energy efficiency ratio) air to air heat pumps are another excellent option for a “Green House”. Some systems have the option of Photovoltaic Solar panels to assist the air handler.
LED lighting is a great way to save energy. LED lights have dropped in price substantially and the CDI (color rendering index) has improved to the point that they do a great job of mimicking incandescent bulbs. LED lighting saves over 80% in electricity use.
Radiant Barrier Roof Sheathing can have an significant effect on reducing your cooling loads in the summer months. This aluminum coating reflects a great deal of the radiant heat from the sun away from your attic space.
